Online collective Anonymous have been quiet recently, haven't they? Well they're back, but this time they're targeting something that is genuinely interesting.

The hacktivist group have gone after many organisations and people in the past, such as ISIS and Donald Trump, but their latest activities have dealt with NASA. Anonymous posted a video to its YouTube page (see below) claiming that Professor Thomas Zurbuchen, a spokesman for the agency, had revealed during a US Science, Space and Technology committee meeting that they're on the cusp of announcing the existence of extra terrestrial life.

"Our civilisation is on the verge of discovering evidence of alien life in the cosmos," he is reported to have said.

"Taking into account all of the different activities and missions that are searching for alien life, we are on the verge of making one of the most profound, unprecedented discoveries in history."

Anonymous posted on their website: "The evidence sure seems to imply that something is going on in the skies above.

"It would cost a lot for spaceships and a continuous flow of taxes and black budget dollars could imply a rational that there is more than meets the eye and or that of public knowledge."

This would certainly follow on neatly from NASA's most recent discovery - recently the US government agency announced that they'd identified ten new planets like Earth outside our solar system.

Overall 219 'new planets' were discovered by the Kepler space telescope, 10 of which are believed to be 'rocky and raw', which exist in their solar system's 'Goldilocks zone'.

According to the Independent, the planets aren't too close to their star, which means they're not too hot, but are also not too far away from their star, meaning they're not too cold for liquid to exist.

The presence of water on planets is key to there being life forms, meaning if it's found on the surface on any of these 'potential new worlds', in theory extra terrestrial beings could perhaps exist.

This official announcement was made earlier this week, so could Anonymous' claims be accurate in that this discovery has led to them finding alien life?

Susan Thompson, a research scientist at the SETI Institute, which searches for signs of extra-terrestrial life, said: "This carefully measured catalogue is the foundation for directly answering one of astronomy's most compelling questions - how many planets like our Earth are in the galaxy?"
